Taking the correct measurements of your springs is essential for ordering the right replacement parts for your garage door. Here is a complete guide to assist you in this process.
Why measure your springs correctly?
The garage door springs support the weight of your door and facilitate its opening and closing. Each door requires specific springs based on its size, weight, and configuration. An incorrect measurement can lead to the purchase of incompatible or ineffective parts. Certain characteristics of your door are indicated on it: manufacturers all affix a manufacturer's plate with information such as the production year, serial number, weight, etc.
The number of turns required for each spring is very often indicated on this plate.
Before you begin
Ensure that your garage door is fully closed and in a resting position. For your safety, do not attempt to handle the springs directly if they are under tension. If you have any doubt, consult a professional.
Type of spring
Identify whether you have a torsion spring (horizontal, above the door) or an extension spring (often vertical, inside the door frame).

This distinction is crucial for ordering the correct type of part.
Measurements to take

Spring length
Measure the total length of the spring, from one end to the other, when it is at rest, meaning not under tension.
Use a tape measure or a rigid ruler to obtain a precise measurement in millimeters.
Spring diameter
Measure the inside diameter of the spring coil. Place your tape measure around the widest part of the spring for this measurement.
Wire diameter
Measure the thickness of the wire that makes up the spring. This dimension is important for determining the strength and load capacity of the spring. To do this, count the number of wires over a 10 cm span. If you count six and a half wires over 10 cm, then your spring wire is 6.5.
Practical tips
Take several measurements for each dimension and write them down. If you have two springs, measure both to verify that they are identical. Take photos of your springs from different angles to facilitate identification. Also, note the make and model of your garage door if possible.
Using your measurements

Once you have your measurements in hand, you can use them to select the right springs.
With some manufacturers, it is possible that the right and left springs are different, or that there may sometimes be only one spring.
In any case, if one of them is broken, we recommend replacing both, much like the shock absorbers on a car.
